Family Advocacy
MHS Weekend Food Bag
This program was created to help supplement families with extra food for the weekend when students do not have access to free and reduced lunch. It is geared towards families that are having severe financial difficulties. The pantry is stocked through the generosity of our MHS staff, parents and students.
Mental Health Advocacy
This program was created to help students and families access mental health services. Through the Children's Service Grant Fund, any student aged 19 and under has access to free mental health care. We also have access to Intensive In-Home services that benefit the entire family. A Social-Emotional Behaviorist is available on an as-needed basis.
Holiday Cheer
This program was created to provide a holiday gift for our neediest students. The MHS staff, parents, and students donate gift cards so the student will have an opportunity to choose something they would really like as a present.
Drug-Free Coalition
Talk. They Hear You.
Children whose parents talk to them regularly about the dangers of underage drinking and drug use are 42% less likely to use drugs than those whose parents do not. Yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations with their parents.
Coalition Response:
- Parents' words do matter. (So do the words and actions of other caring adults.)
- It's never too early to begin these age-appropriate conversations.
- Our "Guiding Good Choices" and "Super Parents" classes, as well as parent tip sheets and brochures, provide strategies for these conversations.
- If parents don't say "no," many kids take this to mean "yes."
- Our annual high school "safe celebration" campaigns—during homecoming and prom—encourage parent conversations with their teens about alcohol and drug use during these high-risk periods.
