Letters of Recommendation
TEACHER Letters of Recommendation:
Many applications require letters of recommendation from TEACHERS, whom you will add to the College Application Manager in SchooLinks.
- We recommend asking teachers in core classes (English, Math, Social Studies, and Science) to write these letters. Communicate deadlines clearly and provide a minimum of 10 school days' notice.
- The request for a recommendation needs to come personally from you - not parents/guardians.
- Be ready to give a teacher a resume or info sheet if they ask for one. However, the focus of their letter should be on your performance in their classroom. If you completed an especially good research paper or project for the class, or a specific incident that you would like them to mention, feel free to suggest that they incorporate it in the letter.
COUNSELOR Letters of Recommendation:
If an application asks specifically for a "counselor" letter of recommendation, you must submit a Counselor Information Sheet only once. Make sure to add the college or university to the College Application Manager in SchooLinks.
"How do I know if a Counselor Letter of Recommendation is required?" Check the college/university's website for a list of what is required to apply.

Follow up with your recommender(s) at a later date and thank them for their time.
